Presented by Janet Walker Binford, the Binford and Mort publishing collection comprises a library of that company's published titles, publicity flyers and lists, and some of the illustrative materials used in their books, particularly photographs illustrating books about Northwest Native Americans. Janet Walker, Reed College class of '36, married Thomas Peter Binford, heir to the Binford and Mort publishing firm started in Portland in 1892 as Metropolitan Printing.

Charles Edward MacBean papers

Overview

Charles Edward MacBean (1899-1984) graduated from Reed in 1932 and, at the height of the Depression, could find no teaching job so became a logger. He remained in logging and construction all his life. MacBean translated Homer's Iliad and Odyssey and other Greek texts into English dactyllic hexameter, and several manuscript translations exist in these papers, along with various poems, plays, and biographical materials.

Overview Charles McKinley (1889-1970) taught political science at Reed from 1918 until his retirement in 1960, when Reed awarded him an honorary LL.D. degree. McKinley was very active outside of Reed; he taught as a visiting professor elsewhere, served as a consultant for many bodies and a member of many others for both Portland and the nation, and he wrote widely about political science. Overview Professor Charles Rhyne (art professor 1960-1997) created the definitive website on the Ara Pacis Augustae, the Roman monument commissioned by the Roman senate in 13 B.C. to honor the return of Augustus to Rome.
